FEATURED OTTAWA NEIGHBOURHOODS SERIES: Manotick Village

Updated Friday, April 24, 2015  ::  Views (10931)

The name Manotick is derived from the Ojibway word meaning “Island in the River”. The Ottawa community of Manotick Village is located along the Rideau River, about 30 minutes from Ottawa’s downtown core.   Although further from the city’s center then other neighbourhoods I have previously featured on this blog, Manotick is very close to the rapidly growing communities of Barrhaven and Riverside South.

Manotick was initially established in 1833 when the village of Long Island Locks (which preceded Manotick) was first settled.  The history of Manotick largely revolves around M.K. Dickinson, who constructed a number of mills in the area including a flower mill that still stands today.  The Mill was purchased in 1946 by Henry Watson, who renamed the mill Watson’s Mill.  To this day Manotick celebrates Dickinson Days on the first Saturday of June to honour Manotick’s founder.

Currently, Manotick is undergoing significant housing development including Minto’s Mahogany and Uniform Urban Developments’ Maple Creek Estates, to only name a couple.  The area appeals to those who want to enjoy the small village lifestyle with its unique and individual character, yet appreciate quick access to the larger suburban communities.

Manotick homes are mainly single, detached homes that start at around $300,000. Generally the population of Manotick is university educated with an average household income of around $150,000. Manotick Village is serviced by four schools from both the Public and Catholic School Boards.  Manotick Public School and South Carleton High School serve under the Public Board, and St. Leonard Catholic School and St. Mark Catholic High School serve under the Catholic Board.

The village is home to many quaint and unique shops, cafes and restaurants that take on the community’s character.  Here are some recommendations:

Restaurants:  Black Dog Bistro, Main Street Cellar, The Mill Tavern, Babbos Cucina Italiana

Coffee Shops / Bakeries: French Café, Take Another Bite (coming soon)

Shopping: My Toy Shop, Green Spirit, Just Imagine Decor, Lindsay & McCaffrey

Fitness: Therien Jiu-Jitsu, Maitreya Yoga, Anytime Fitness
